Cold foam is a trend that has been catching on over these last few months. Cold foam is the best solution for steamed milk in cold drinks.
Since steamed milk will just melt into the drink, you can use cold foam for your sweet topping instead. If you are worried about adding too much sweetness to your diet, should you forego the cold foam?
Is there any added sugar in cold foam?
There is no extra sugar in cold foam but it does have some sugar in it. Cold foam is simply nonfat milk that has air added to it. The only sugar in your cold foam is whatever is already in the milk.
You can enjoy your cold foam guilt-free however it isn’t sugar free.
What Is Cold Foam?
If you love whipped cream and cold coffee drinks, then cold foam is a must. If you haven’t tried it yet, you should.
Cold foam adds a sweet taste to your drink without too many calories either. So, what exactly is cold foam other than a topping on your drink?
Cold foam is frothed, nonfat milk that goes on top of your cold coffee drinks. You can use cold foam on iced coffee, cold brews, iced cappuccinos, and nitro coffee.
Cold foam is like the steamed cream on top of warm drinks, but since it would just melt right into the cold drink, you can have cold foam. Cold foam has a similar texture to whipped cream and has a sweet taste too.
Can Cold Foam Be Dairy-Free?
If you are lactose intolerant or just avoiding dairy, toppings and creamer for your coffee drinks can be a bit tricky. You have to do your research before going in, asking for your favorite drink, and risking that there’s dairy in it.
Most coffee shops are accommodating to allergies and have substitutes that you can choose from to enjoy your drink. If you are dairy-free, for creamer you can ask for almond or oat milk.
What about cold foam? Can the barista make your cold foam dairy-free?
Cold foam can be dairy-free. If you are ordering at the coffee shop, be sure to ask for your cold foam made from dairy-free creamer or almond milk.
If you plan on making your cold foam at home, skip the milk ingredient and add your favorite creamer or almond milk instead.
How Do You Make Cold Foam?
Trying new things is always fun and exciting. If you plan on starting a new hobby, make sure to do your research and see what tools you need to start your hobby.
If you like hiking, you need appropriate footwear, apparel, and a place to hike. If you are interested in painting, you need canvases or wood to paint, paints, and paintbrushes.
No matter what hobby you are going to try, there are usually tools you need to make your new hobby happen.
You can start creating your favorite coffee drink items at home as your hobby. Not only will you get to try something new, but you will also get to enjoy a delicious cup of coffee afterward.
If you are planning on starting with iced coffee, don’t forget to add cold foam. If you are unsure of how to make cold foam, you can follow any one of these methods.
- Use a hand frother: A hand milk frother is powered by batteries or rechargeable by USB. You stick the metal whisk end into the milk, push the on button, and froth away. Froth for about 2-3 minutes or until the milk has become nice and frothy.
- Use a French press: You can use a French press to create your cold foam. Pour the milk into the French press, take the lid off the cover, and plunge/whisk for about 5-10 minutes or until the milk has become frothy.
- Use a milk frother: If you have a machine already for milk frothing then this is the easiest method. Just pour your milk into the frother, push cold foam, and push start.
- Use a mason jar: If you don’t have any of these items in your home, you can still make cold foam. Just pour your milk into a mason jar and start shaking. Keep shaking until your milk becomes frothy. It may take a moment, but the results are still the same.
Can You Make Cold Foam From Creamer?
Cold foam is an excellent addition on top of any cold coffee. But, is there a way to make that cold foam any better? What if you could take your favorite creamer, froth it, and put it on your drink?
You could end up with spiced pumpkin cold foam, caramel macchiato cold foam, hazelnut cold foam, and so much more. Is it possible to take any creamer and turn it into cold foam?
Any kind of creamer can essentially be turned into cold foam. All you would need to do is pour your creamer into a jar and use one of the many methods of frothing it.
Once you’ve reached the desired texture of cold foam, pour it on top of your favorite cold drink.
Can You Make Cold Foam Without A Frother?
Getting new appliances can either be fun or exhausting. There is always something new coming out to make your life in the kitchen so much easier. However, with all these appliances, you would need miles of counter space.
Some appliances are small enough that they can be placed in drawers or under the counter while others must always stay out. You also have your favorite appliances that get used almost every day, like the coffee machine. Your coffee maker is a must to stay on the counter.
If adding a milk frother to your list of appliances is not ideal, can you still make cold foam? Do you have to purchase a frother in order to enjoy cold foam at home?
You do not need a frother to enjoy cold foam at home. Having a frother to make cold foam is a much easier option, but it is not impossible to make cold foam without it.
All you need to froth milk is a mason jar with a lid that will screw on tightly. Fill half the mason jar with milk and start shaking. You won’t want to fill the jar too full since the milk will froth and expand.
If it has nowhere to expand to, you’ll just be shaking milk to shake milk. Once you have vigorously shaken the jar for a few minutes, you will end up with homemade cold foam (and a stronger arm).
Final Thoughts
Next time you order cold foam for your drink, you won’t have to worry about any extra sugar. If you want to enjoy your favorite drinks at home, you can create your cold cream with milk or creamer.
