Radishes can be used in many different recipes. Most of the time they are eaten raw in salads or shredded into slaws.

They are rich in calcium, potassium, and dietary fiber. Radishes are moderately high in Vitamin C and the sodium content of this veggie is also very high. They are low in calories, fat, and cholesterol making them a healthy vegetable to eat.

Radishes can be planted in the fall or up to four weeks before the last frost in the spring and they mature in three weeks. If you grow radishes yourself in a garden you know how this means you could end up with more radishes than you will be able to use.

The vegetables may end up taking up too much space in your refrigerator, so why not freeze them?

You can freeze radishes to use later or in upcoming weeks. They last for one or two weeks in the fridge but will last up to 6 months in the freezer.  They are still good after being frozen if the process is done correctly.

Radishes are made up of mostly water so freezing them may affect their texture a little bit. But if you cut and blanche them before freezing then you can prevent this from happening.

To freeze radishes, first you should scrub them clean in cold water. Then cut or grate them into smaller pieces.

Blanch the radishes in boiling water from 2 to 3 minutes and then transfer to an ice bath.

Blanching is done for most vegetables that you want to freeze. It is the process of giving the vegetables a quick dunk in hot water and then a dunk in very cold water.

This method stops enzymes from producing which could cause the veggie to lose flavor, color or texture. After you have blanched the radishes, drain them well and place in a plastic bag to freeze.

Can Raw Radishes Be Frozen?

Usually radishes are eaten raw on salads or just cut and sprinkled with some salt. The radishes you want to eat are smooth, crisp, and well-formed without many black spots. When you have chosen the perfect radishes you can freeze them.

Raw radishes can be frozen since they are eaten raw most of the time. Just dice the veggies and peel it and blanch. Then place it in a freezer bag and put it into the freezer.

Before freezing the radishes, Cut off the tops, roots and stems to be used another way. Wash them well and cut in halves, slices, or quarters.

To keep the radishes from losing too much of their flavor or texture, blache them. Since radishes consist mostly of water this will keep them good after being frozen.

After blanching the radishes, flash freeze them until frozen which is about six hours and then transfer them to a freezer bag to store long-term

If you find yourself with a lot of radishes from your garden or maybe you don’t want to go to the store everyday and like to stock up on radishes whenever you can without them going bad, freeze them. They will last for up to 6 months in the freezer.

After being frozen raw radishes can be used in salads, dressings, or in any way you’d like.

Can You Freeze Radishes Without Blanching?

We already discussed what blanching was, but should it be done before freezing radishes? Radishes are a very delicate vegetable and if you don’t blanch them before you freeze them they will lose a lot of their texture and taste.

If you need to freeze radishes, it is recommended that you always blanch them before freezing them for the best texture and taste.

You can freeze radishes for up to 6 months before they go bad/ lose their taste and texture. When you freeze them, choose the best ones and blanch them first by placing them in boiling water followed by a dip in cold water.

If you carelessly throw them into the freezer, they will not taste good when you get them out. It can ruin their flavor and the texture of the vegetable. Blanching them will also preserve the color and freshness of the vegetable.

Because of this you should always blanch radishes before freezing them. Cleaning them well is also important because you want to remove all of the dirt and trim the ends off.

But remember not to peel the radishes! Its skin protects its white flesh and texture so it will taste good.

To thaw radishes just run them under cold water. This should not take a very long time and when they become somewhat squishy, they are safe to cook.

What Can I Do With Lots Of Radishes?

Somehow your garden produced more radishes than you thought it would or perhaps someone gave you their leftovers and now your kitchen features the vegetable on the counter and filling the refrigerator.

There are many radish recipes you can make with radishes or while you are waiting to use them, you guessed it, freeze them!

First of all, serve them raw! Radishes are usually eaten this way on salad or with salt. Eat them raw by slicing and placing them on a baguette with butter.

Second, you could put the radishes in vinegar. Or how about tossing them into Risotto. Another way to eat radishes is to roast them for a delicious side to any meal.

Put radishes in tacos for extra flavor. Try shaving or slicing them really thin to toss into salads or put on sandwiches. The sliced radishes can also be put in soups or on top of scallops.

You could also grill the veggie with steaks or the meat of your choice to add in some taste. However you fix your radishes, they will be good and healthy to eat.

Final Thoughts

Freezing radishes will help keep them longer so you can use them a couple of months later. The process must be done right and after freezing, there are so many ways radishes can be fixed.

So if you have a lot of radishes taking up room in your refrigerator, freeze them to fix later.

Follow the steps to freezing them properly and you will have good radishes with the right texture and flavor for all those delicious radish recipes.
