Does Ice Cream Require Eggs?
If you love ice cream, you may have tried to make your own homemade ice cream. Not wanting to add any egg to the recipe you may be asking, does ice cream require eggs?
Ice cream doesn’t have to have eggs in it. There are plenty of egg-free options when it comes to types of ice cream. Also, if you want to skip eggs in your homemade ice cream by all means you can.
The eggs are totally optional when making homemade ice cream. There are many ice creams that you can buy that are egg-free as well. Eggs give the ice cream a creamier consistency but you don’t have to have them if you don’t want to.
If your homemade ice cream recipe calls for eggs, there are things you can substitute in instead or leave them out altogether but i’m getting ahead of myself. I will get to that next.
Just know that ice cream doesn’t require eggs.
How Can I Substitute Eggs In Ice Cream?
So, you are making some yummy homemade ice cream. Your recipe calls for eggs to be added but you want to skip this step. Is there an egg substitute that you could use to make homemade ice cream instead?
How can you substitute eggs in your ice cream?
Eggs give ice cream a rich flavor and creamier texture and make for a good custard base. If you don’t want eggs in your ice cream simply substitute agar-agar powder or cream cheese for eggs in your homemade ice cream recipes or just don’t add any eggs at all and have a bit less of a smooth texture.
Some other things can be subbed for the egg in ice cream. Agar-agar powder can be used in place of eggs in a homemade ice cream recipe. This will thicken it up and make it creamy without the use of any eggs.
Cornstarch and cream cheese (or sugar) can even be used in place of the eggs. Or, just don’t substitute anything at all.
Ice cream doesn’t have to have egg (known as “Philadelphia style” ice cream) or thickeners unless you want a more creamy ice cream.
Are There Eggs In Sherbet?
Rainbow colored and sweet to eat, sherbet is a delicious dessert. It isn’t necessarily ice cream but is very similar.
Since we are talking about eggs, is there egg in sherbet?
Sherbet does not contain any eggs as well as no milk or cream. It isn’t really ice cream but more of a frozen dessert made with fruit and water. Sometimes a little bit of milk is added to the sherbet but never any egg.
So, if you are allergic to eggs or don’t want egg in your ice cream, sherbet is a great option. Including no eggs and similar to ice cream in its consistency and sweet taste, this dessert can have milk in it.
Although usually a low amount, this means that not all sherbets are dairy-free. For this type of ice cream try sorbet which is always dairy and egg-free.
Final Thoughts
The question, “does ice cream have eggs?” is a hard one to say yes or no to but hopefully the list of brands that do and don’t have eggs in them has been helpful to you.
There are several kinds of the cold creamy dessert that don’t have any egg which is perfect for those with an egg allergy.
Sherbet also doesn’t have any eggs in it but may contain some milk. Egg isn’t required and can be left out of ice cream recipes or other things can be subbed in for it if you are making ice cream at home using an ice cream maker and custom reciper as well.
So, you can still enjoy ice cream if you can’t eat eggs since many delicious ice creams are made without them.
