Milk is used in so many recipes for baking. Almost every household has some type of milk sitting inside their refrigerator.

Non-dairy milk is a good choice for those who are lactose intolerant or vegan and there are also many of those to choose from. You have almond milk, coconut milk, and our topic of discussion, oat milk. 

Oat milk is made from soaking oats in water and then straining it. This makes milky liquid that can replace dairy milk. Oat milk is plant-based and a great dairy free substitute for milk. 

But what about vice versa? Can you substitute milk for oat milk?

You can substitute milk for oat milk or vice versa by using the same amount the recipe calls for. Regular cow’s milk is what is used in most recipes with the plant-based milks being the subs. So, yes, you can use milk in place of oat milk in cooking.

Milk can always be used as a substitute for oat milk. In reality, most recipes call for regular milk as opposed to oat milk. So, these are used interchangeably. 

You would use cow’s milk if you want a thicker consistency in your recipe and are not lactose intolerant. You would use oat milk if you are lactose intolerant. 

Just remember oat milk is lighter and so your recipes will end up being lighter than it would be if you used whole milk. Still, oat milk will result in a sound structure to the dish.

For one reason or another, if you do not want to use oat milk in a recipe, you can use regular milk. This can be substituted for the same amount as the oat milk is called for in the recipe. 

When using oat milk in a recipe, know that it contains more water than regular milk. This means that the water will evaporate and cause the baked goods to bake faster. 

So, you will need to bake the dish for a shorter amount of time. Also, cow’s milk has natural sugars whereas oat milk does not. So, when you bake with it, your desserts may come out looking a little pale, but it will still taste good.

Milk can be used instead of oat milk and oat milk can be used instead of milk. They have the same consistency and a similar taste. Now, it may seem obvious, but we are going to discuss it anyway, what is the difference between oat milk and regular milk?

The differences between oat milk and regular milk all come down to what they are from. Regular milk is from a cow while oat milk is from, you guessed it, oats! Regular milk contains lactose and oat milk does not.

Oat milk and regular milk are definitely different.  Able to be used interchangeably, they are similar in consistency as well as taste. The texture of the oat milk is close to regular milk except for being a little more watery. 

While oat milk is thought to be a “healthier” option to regular milk, it actually contains less nutrients than cow’s milk. However, for those who are lactose intolerant or vegan, oat milk is the better choice. 

Milk can be used as a substitute for oat milk because they have similar consistencies. When used in place of one another can still result in delicious desserts.

What Can Replace Milk In A Recipe?

So, milk can be used instead of oat milk. Coming from oats, oat milk is a good dairy-free choice for milk. Oats are soaked in water, blended, and then strained to create this milk substitute. 

What are some other types of milk that can be substituted for milk?

Any other kind of milk can be used as a substitute for milk such as non-dairy milks (oat milk, almond milk, coconut milk, etc), evaporated milk, or dry milk. Sour cream or yogurt and half and half can also be used as milk substitutes.

All of these can replace milk in a recipe. Since we are talking about oat milk in this article, let’s stay on that subject. Oat milk can be used in place of milk and milk can be used in place of oat milk. 

Some people can’t have cow’s milk. They are lactose intolerant and cannot digest and/or it makes them sick. Milk allergies are very common and that is why there are many dairy free milk options. 

Some simply don’t want to drink dairy milk. Vegans don’t use anything coming from animals and so they don’t drink cow’s milk. 

Oat milk is a good non-dairy option for both of these types of people and it can be used in place of milk for anything. It can even be made at home by blending up some oats with water and then straining it for a smooth oat milk.

Milk can be substituted for oat milk and vice versa. The difference between the two is that regular milk comes from cows and oat milk is made from oats. 

Usually recipes call for regular milk but some that are dairy-free or vegan use a non-dairy milk like oat milk. On the other hand if a recipe calls for regular milk and you want to use any dairy free milk, like oat milk, in place of it you can.
