Is Grouper Healthy To Eat?

Grouper is an excellent source of vitamins and minerals. Just one serving of grouper can supply you with 25 percent of your daily Vitamin D, 15 percent of your iron, and 20 percent of your magnesium needs along with small amount of B-complex and omega 3s

People love grouper mostly for their delicious taste, although the fact that they contain so many healthy minerals is a plus. Grouper meat has a good amount of Vitamin D, iron, magnesium and a  small amount of B-complex.

There are more than 400 different species of grouper. Some of these are more popular than others. Some of the most common types of groupers include black grouper, yellowedge, speckled hind, and coney among others.

  1. Snowy Grouper –  Being the most delicious of all the groupers, it is brown and white and can be caught at depths of 350 feet or more and reach a weight of 50 pounds.
  1. Nassau – Called the White Grouper for their coloring or Bahamas Grouper because they are found there, this endangered grouper partners with other fish to catch meals.
  1. Red grouper – Getting its name from its red coloring, this type of grouper is found in Florida waters. It lives 1000 feet below the surface and puts up a fight when caught.
  1. Scamp – Smaller than other types, this grouper averages 5 pounds. It is one of the most delicious groupers and is found in deep water.
  1. Warsaw grouper – This huge fish is found in deep water and can grow to be 7 feet and weigh about 600 pounds. To catch one of these, you need the proper equipment and crew.
  1. Misty – weighing between 15 and 50 pounds, this fish swims in depths of 500 feet and is known by its brown body with light, vertical bars.
  1. Yellowfin Grouper – this grouper gets its name from its vibrant yellow fins and markings which help it to blend in as they hunt in the reefs but stand out as they near the surface.
  1. Yellowmouth Grouper – Able to be identified by its plump yellow lips, this grouper is smaller than a scamp averaging only 2 to 3 pounds but they are very tasty.
