Lasagna is typically made with either ricotta or cottage cheese. These cheeses are interchangeable for different texture or fat content of the dish depending on your preference.

Does Lasagna Have/Need Cottage Cheese?

The cheese in lasagna is typically ricotta cheese although you can make the dish with cottage cheese instead. These cheeses can be used interchangeably in many recipes but cottage cheese will be the healthier option.

Ricotta cheese is smooth and creamier than cottage cheese tasting subtly sweet. It also has more calories but less sodium than cottage cheese which is lumpier and wetter than ricotta.

If you want a lighter lasagna, then opt for cottage cheese. Ricotta’s texture is dense, fine, and grainy whereas cottage cheese is lumpier. If you want to switch up lasagna for one with less calories than cottage cheese is a good substitute.

If you really love a cheesy lasagna you can add in other cheese with the ricotta like mozzarella, provolone, romano, and parmesan. Also, if you search your fridge for some ricotta cheese to add into your lasagna and don’t have any, you can use cottage cheese instead.

Other ricotta substitutes you can make lasagna with are goat cheese, sour cream, cream cheese, queso fresco, and mascarpone. Lasagna doesn’t have to have cottage cheese in it but can be made with it along with these other substitutes.

According to your taste buds you may prefer ricotta cheese over cottage cheese but this is a personal preference.

Is Lasagna Better With Ricotta Or Cottage Cheese?

Lasagna is easy to make at home but what may be a hard decision is whether you should use ricotta or cottage cheese in it? Is lasagna better with ricotta or cottage cheese?

If you want a more creamy lasagna, go with ricotta. If you want a lighter and healthier lasagna then cottage cheese is the best choice.

Depending on what you like to eat either roccta or cottage cheese will be best to use in a lasagna recipe.

If lasagna is better with ricotta or cottage cheese all depends on what you mean by better. They both taste pretty similar but differ in texture and fat content. Better in the fact that it has creamier consistency and texture then ricotta is the way to go.

If you mean better in the fact it is healthier for you to consume and is a lighter cheese to eat, than cottage cheese should be your cheesy ingredient in the lasagna.

You are making some lasagna for dinner. Looking up recipes on how to make the best lasagna, you found some with ricotta and some with cottage cheese. While at the grocery store you were having a hard time choosing which kind of cheese to make the delicious meal with.

Well, lasagna can be good either way.

Both cheeses have a different texture and fat content but both make some amazing lasagna. Since cottage cheese is more watery than ricotta you can try draining it or squeezing out the excess moisture with a towel. Or just get some full fat cottage cheese.

The reason it may be watery is because low-fat cottage cheese loses whey as it cooks. So, if you want a creamier and less moist cheese in your lasagna then ricotta is the cheese for you.

What Can I Substitute For Cottage Cheese In Lasagna?

Lasagna is a favorite in your household and it is what’s on the menu for dinner. You prefer using cottage cheese in your recipe and while adding in all the yummy ingredients you realize that’s the one ingredient you are out of.

What can you substitute for cottage cheese in a lasagna recipe?

Ricotta, goat cheese, or cream cheese can all be used in lasagna in place of cottage cheese. The lasagna will still taste good when subbing in these ingredients for the cottage cheese.

So, you don’t have any cottage cheese, no worries! Ricotta can be used in lasagna, too! Some even prefer using this type of cheese in the pasta recipe.

Goat cheese, cream cheese or queso fresco can also be used in lasagna. Other substitutes for cottage cheese in lasagna are sour cream, and mascarpone.

Using these types of ingredients instead of cottage cheese will result in different flavors and textures so it might be worth trying them all and seeing which you like the best.

This is why ricotta is often used, even if you have some cottage cheese. Still, these ingredients will work just fine for your lasagna if you are out of cottage cheese or want or try a different recipe.

It’s all up to your own personal preference but all of these will still provide you with a wonderful tasting pasta dish. Enjoy experimenting and who knows, maybe you will find a new favorite way to make your favorite lasagna.

Which Is Healthier, Cottage Cheese Or Ricotta?

You are trying to watch those calories yet still want to eat your favorite lasagna. Which is healthier, cottage cheese or ricotta?

If you are wanting lighter lasagna, use cottage cheese in your recipe in place of ricotta. Cottage cheese is also healthier for you than ricotta.

Cottage cheese is made from milk that has been coagulated to form curds. There are different milk fat percentages according to what cottage cheese you get. There is fat-free, 1 percent, 2 percent, and 4 percent or creamed cottage cheese.

Cottage cheese’s nutrition is based on these milk fat percentages.

Cottage cheese is milky and creamy with a little bit of saltiness. It can also be somewhat tart. It has a chucky and wet texture.

Ricotta is made from the leftover whey from making other cheeses like mozzarella. Usually the whey is fermented and heated.

Some modern techniques replace the whey with skim or whole milk. Ricotta is more smooth and creamy but often has a grainy texture.

The biggest difference between cottage cheese and ricotta cheese is their nutrition. Full-fat or creamed cottage cheese has 220 calories while whole milk ricotta has 428 calories. So if you are cutting back on calories in your diet try substituting cottage cheese or ricotta for a healthier meal.

On the other hand, cottage cheese is loaded with sodium so if you are trying to cut back on your sodium intake then ricotta is the better option.

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, lasagna doesn’t have to be made with or need cottage cheese. There are other substitutes for cottage cheese that lasagna can be made with.

Some people prefer cottage cheese in their lasagna recipe while others prefer ricotta. These two cheeses taste similar but have different textures and nutrition.

Which type of cheese is better is all up to which one you like better. If you are wanting a lighter and healthier cheese than cottage cheese is the better option.

Whether you use cottage cheese or ricotta when making your lasagna, its layers of meat, cheese, and sauce will taste delicious.
