There are countless recipes that you can choose from to get the best-tasting short ribs. These cuts of beef are narrow and shorter than traditional ribs. While the meat may not be as tender as steak, it has much more flavor.

What Is The Difference Between Baby Back and Spare Ribs?
When it’s time for dinner, you don’t necessarily care what’s on your plate, as long as something is there. However, if you’re the one preparing dinner, it is best to know what you plan on making.
When you plan out your menu, your shopping list contains all the items needed to make this week’s dinners happen. If you plan on having ribs, which option of ribs is better?
Is there a big difference between spare ribs and baby back ribs? Do they cook the same?
The main difference between baby back ribs and spare ribs is their length. Baby back ribs will be shorter while spare ribs will be longer. Spare ribs will also have more meat in them than baby back ribs will.
Baby back ribs come from the part of the ribs that are connected to the backbone. They are called baby ribs because they are shorter than spare ribs.
At their longest, they are typically around six inches and can taper down to about three inches. Each rack is about one pound bone and one pound of meat; it will feed one adult.
Spare ribs are cut from the ends of the baby back ribs and run to the breastbone. Spare ribs have much more meat than baby back ribs. The bones are straighter and the meat will typically have more flavor than baby back ribs.
A rack of spare ribs is about one and a half pound bone and one and three-quarter pound meat; it can feed about two adults.
What Do You Do With Leftover Rib Bones?
Whether ribs are an every-week dinner item or only for special occasions, they are a delicious choice for meat. Once you are done eating the meat from the bones, you are left with a whole rack of rib bones.

- Use the rib bones for bone broth. There are several health benefits to making your own bone broth. Bone broth is high in all sorts of vitamins and minerals that your body needs. With all these added vitamins and minerals to your broth, your soup could end up helping relieve pain in your joints. Some other health benefits are that the bone broth might reduce the inflammation in your gut and help heal it as well. Next time you have leftover rib bones, save them and create your own healthy bone broth. You’ll need a gallon of water, an ounce of vinegar, and about 3 pounds of bones and tissue. You can cook your bone broth in a slow cooker and simmer for about 10 hours. You can also make this on the stove. Once your bone broth is ready, you can add meat, vegetables, and other spices to give your bone broth some added flavor.
- Throw the rib bones in your compost pile. Rib bones are safe to be thrown in your compost pile. However, if you know that animals frequent your compost pile, then you may want to throw the rib bones away. Since the ribs were cooked bone-in, this means that the rib bones are more likely to splinter and end up hurting the animals. If your compost pile is safe and no animals can get to it, then you can toss the leftover rib bones in your compost pile.
- DO NOT give leftover rib bones to your pets. As easy as it would be to throw your leftover bones at your dog for a treat, it is not safe. Rib bones are cooked and can end up splintering into shards that will cause your pet to choke or tear its esophagus. Cooked and raw animal bones can be dangerous to your pet as they can not only splinter but also break off into small parts. Even if your dog doesn’t swallow the bone, the fatty tissue on the ribs can end up causing vomiting and diarrhea for your pet. It’s best to avoid giving your pet bones and give them veterinary-approved treats instead.
Whether you prefer beef or pork ribs, both meat options will have bones. However, you can purchase boneless ribs, but it will normally cost more since the butcher took the extra time to remove the bones.
If you do have rib bones leftover, be sure to save them for a bone broth and never allow animals to get a hold of the leftover rib bones since it could harm them.
