We get it. Coffee drinks are delicious but all of the different kinds can get a bit overwhelming. You have cappuccinos, lattes, americanos, and the list goes on.

Unless you have made coffee for a job before or taught yourself the ins and outs of it, you probably aren’t sure exactly how each one is made. I mean, there’s the espresso, the flavoring syrups, the milk that is steamed or not if it’s an iced coffee, and whether you want that coffee, hot or cold.

While some like to just take shots of espresso to give them energy. Others prefer to have a sweetened and creamy drink to please their taste buds while they receive that energy boost. A latte is a perfect example of a coffee beverage that is satisfying and delicious.

So, for our question, do lattes have foam?

Lattes do have foam. Most varieties of this specialty coffee that is poured into the espresso and flavoring is steamed with a light layer of foam.

Do Lattes Have Foam?

Now, iced lattes can have foam if cold foam is made for it. A hot latte has a small amount of foam topping it.  When frothing the milk for a latte, the barista makes sure not to form bubbles throughout all of the liquid. When the milk is finished being steamed the frother is used to create tiny bubbles on the top to form a foam.

When the milk is poured into a mug, the steamed milk goes in first, leaving the foamy stuff for last which goes nicely into the drink. This foam can add a nice taste as well as appearance to the coffee.

Some even make art in the foam forming designs for an artistic touch. Hearts, leaves and designs can all be made in the latte’s foam for a coffee that looks professionally made and so yummy.

So, yes, lattes do have foam no matter if they are hot or cold.

Should A Latte Have Foam?

The term “latte” is actually a shortened form of the Italian phrase “caffe latte”. This phrase means “milk coffee” and is a favorite specialty coffee drink for many.

A latte is similar to a cappuccino but with added flavoring and not as much foam. So, should a latte have foam?

A latte should have a little bit of foam. While a cappuccino is made with a lot of foam, a latte is a different kind of coffee with a light layer of foam topping it.

Lattes are made with steamed/frothed milk. A cappuccino is a distinctly layered drink with a lot of foamy milk. Espresso, then frothed milk are features of the drink.

A latte has flavoring in it as well as the espresso and steamed milk being mixed together. The last of the milk is foamy for just a light topping. The last part of this milk that is poured into the mug is foamy and layers the top of the drink.

Steamed milk makes up most of a latte with just a touch of foam at the top. Lattes can also be made with different flavoring syrups like vanilla, hazelnut, raspberry, etc. A cappuccino on the other hand is mainly frothed milk and very foamy. Only hot coffee drinks are made with the steamed/frothed milk unless it is a cold brew or iced coffee with cold foam.

This type of foam is different in the fact that it is made without heated air and sits on top of iced coffee beverages.

Do Lattes Taste Like Coffee?

So, a latte should have a little bit of foam. Latte art can be created with the frothy milk that is poured on top of the coffee. The latte’s foam can be made into many different designs or none at all.

Since it is thick and doesn’t mix in with the drink right away, you can form a design in the foam.

If you have ever been to a coffee shop you have probably received a latte featuring this. These are lattes proving the point that lattes should have foam. But, do lattes taste like coffee?

Lattes do taste like coffee because they are made with coffee. However lattes have the most subtle taste out of all the coffees since they are mostly milk.

Lattes are a popular coffee beverage. Some who don’t like a strong and bitter coffee taste can enjoy a latte. It is the perfect mixture of coffee, milk, and sweetness.

According to the article, The Beginner’s Guide to Different Types of Coffee,A latte is a very milk-heavy drink. The coffee taste is masked by the milk, so lattes are not incredibly strong. A latte will ordinarily contain two shots of espresso, steamed milk, and foam on the top. Additionally, a latte is a great coffee drink to enjoy with a flavor shot like vanilla or hazelnut. Lattes tend to be sweet, but they are not as sweet as mochas.”

To make a latte, first espresso is added to the flavoring syrup then steamed milk is mixed in. A little bit of foamy milk is added as a final layer on top.

Different types of milks can be used to make a latte. Typically made with whole milk, a latte can also be made with nonfat (skim), or nut milks (almond, coconut, etc.).

Out of all the different kinds of espresso drinks, a latte tastes the least like coffee. A lot of milk is added into a latte and this along with the flavoring covers up some of the coffee taste.

A latte delivers a slight coffee taste in between all the sweetness.

Final Thoughts

Lattes do have foam. They are made with espresso, flavoring syrups, and steamed milk. The last of the steamed/frothed milk is foamy and since it is added last to the drink, it gives it a foamy topping.

Similar to a cappuccino but with less foam, lattes are meant to and should have foam.

Out of all the different kinds of coffee, a latte probably tastes the least like coffee. If you aren’t a strong coffee kind of person, then a latte is for you. It will still have a coffee taste but just not as strong.

Lattes are a delicious coffee drink that do have foam.
