Coffee is enjoyed by people everywhere. Some drink it black while others pour some creamer into it.

For a specialty coffee, things get a little more complicated. Espresso is often mixed with steamed or frothed milk and sweeteners like flavored syrup are added for flavor. With the introduction of cold foam and sweet cream came a whole other level of coffee.

But since they seem so similar, it may cause you to wonder, are cold foam and sweet cream the same thing?

Cold foam and sweet cream are very similar in texture but are made with different ingredients. They both have different tastes when poured onto coffee with the sweet cream being more sweet than cold foam.

Cold foam is made with nonfat milk that is frothed to create a foamy topping. Sweet cream is made with heavy cream, 2% milk, and vanilla syrup and is whisked or frothed to top coffee.

They are very much alike and may seem like the same thing but when tasting them both, you will notice that the sweet cream is sweeter than the cold foam. This is because the sweet cream is made with vanilla and cold foam is just made with plain milk.

So the difference between cold foam and sweet cream is that sweet cream is sweetened and cold foam is just milk. If you like sweeter things, then sweet cream is for you. If not, cold foam is the way to go.

There is such a thing as sweet cream cold foam which combines these both for an especially delicious coffee. It’s a frothy version of sweet cream and tastes great when added to coffee.

So, even though they seem the same, cold foam and sweet cream are slightly different.

Is Sweet Cream Different Than Sweet Cream Cold Foam?

With so many types of specialty coffee drinks out there it can get confusing on what is what. There is sweet cream and then there is sweet cream cold foam.

You may be wondering if these are different and if so, how?

Regular sweet cream is different from sweet cold foam. They are different because the cold foam version of the topping is frothed creating tiny air bubbles in the liquid forming a creamy foam. Sweet cream is made by just whisking the ingredients together.

According to the article, How to Make Vanilla Sweet Cream Cold Foam by Grounds to Brew, when talking about cold foam, they state that, “Starbucks cold foam is whipped nonfat milk that sits on top of cold brew coffee drinks. Each sip of a cold foam-topped drink…is a tasty mix of coffee and cream……the non-fat milk is whipped at a very high speed in a special, bladeless blender. The result is a “foam”…it’s intended to be served with cold brew or nitro cold brew.”

When making sweet cream, its ingredients are whisked together to create a creamy liquid that is then poured into the coffee or espresso. On the other hand, sweet cream cold foam is the same ingredients frothed to create a light and airy foam used to top the coffee or espresso.

Usually the cold foam version of sweet cream is used on iced coffee and the regular sweet cream is used in hot or cold coffee. It’s all about what you prefer the texture to be.

What Is Sweet Cream? / What Is Cold Foam?

Sweet cream and cold foam are both so similar it can be difficult to know what the difference is between the two. Well, it all comes down to what they are made with and how they are made.

So, what is sweet cream and what is cold foam?

Sweet cream is made up of heavy cream, 2% milk and vanilla syrup whisked together then added into espresso drinks. Cold foam is nonfat milk that is frothed and poured on top of espresso drinks.

A sweet cream cold foam is the sweet cream that has been frothed.

The article mentioned earlier goes on to talk about sweet cream saying that, “Starbucks vanilla sweet cream is a simple mixture of vanilla syrup, 2% milk and heavy cream. This vanilla-flavored cream is the perfect creamy touch in a cup of cold brew coffee…..if you order a drink with vanilla sweet cream, the cream is not blended into a foam. I guess you can think of this cream like a thinner vanilla whipped cream that hasn’t been whipped.”

So, cold foam is a frothy nonfat milk that is light and airy and used to top iced coffee. Sweet cream is a mixture of heavy cream, 2% milk, and vanilla syrup that is creamy and normally poured into coffee.

Like I said before, there is a sweet cream cold foam that is the perfect blend of the two. The ingredients of sweet cream are frothed for a foamy coffee topping.

If you like sweet coffee, then sweet cream is right up your alley. If you prefer something airier, try cold foam.

Final Thoughts

When talking about sweet cream vs cold foam, they are different coffee toppings. Cold foam is only made with milk while sweet cream is made with heavy cream, 2% milk, and vanilla syrup.

Cold foam is frothed for a light and airy texture and sweet cream is whisked to make smooth cream. Sweet cream cold foam is these two wonderful coffee toppings mixed together. It is the sweet cream ingredients frothed into a foam.

If you like sweet coffee then it is suggested you try the sweet cream or sweet cream cold foam. If you prefer a lighter coffee topping then the cold foam is calling your name.

There are many ways to make specialty coffee drinks and it can be hard to choose the toppings or what to put in your drink. If you are unsure of which to get, try both the cold foam and sweet cream to find which one you like the best.

Top off your day with either some cold foam, sweet cream, or go all out with a sweet cream cold foam.
