Is It Safe To Fry Frozen Chicken?

It’s convenient to freeze foods for later. But it can be frustrating when you forget to thaw food for dinner. Especially if you are needing to cook it right away. So, if you have forgotten to thaw the chicken, you can cook it frozen.

There are certain ways to go about frying frozen chicken though and you may be wondering, is it safe to fry frozen chicken?

If you do it correctly, it is safe to fry frozen chicken. There are some guidelines you should follow and the chicken will need to be cooked for almost twice as long as normal. But, if you want to fry chicken frozen, you can.

Frozen chicken can be cooked in a few different ways. You can deep fry, pan fry, or oven cook frozen chicken. Frozen chicken will need to fry for longer because it will defrost while it is being fried.

When you’re frying chicken, you should choose a cooking method that won’t overcook the chicken, but will cook it all the way through and also make a golden and crispy crust. Remember not to overfill the fryer and you will have to lower the temperature it is set at. That also means the chicken will have to cook longer.

Make sure the internal temperature of the chicken is fully cooked at 165 degrees Fahrenheit or higher. Also make sure the color of the meat is white and no longer pink and that the juices are clear and not red or pink.

Be sure to follow the proper cooking times and temperatures. Don’t try to increase the temperature to make the chicken cook faster because this can cause the outside to cook more than the inside resulting in chicken that isn’t cooked well. Frying frozen chicken will take longer than thawed chicken but it isn’t difficult to do as long as you follow these helpful guidelines for best results.

So, yes, it is safe to fry frozen chicken.

How Long Does It Take To Fry Frozen Chicken?

Fried chicken is delicious. Served with some mashed potatoes and green beans you have a comforting meal. If you forget to thaw the meat, you can fry frozen chicken. Just remember to fry it at the right temperature.

Now that we discussed that it is safe to fry, how long does it take to fry frozen chicken?

Frozen chicken should be fried for approximately 1.5 to 2 times as long as unfrozen chicken. So, if you are supposed to fry raw and unfrozen for 5 minutes, you will need to increase this time to 7.5 to 10 minutes and so on.

It will take a while to cook frozen chicken, but remember that you are skipping the thawing process. If you don’t like using the microwave to defrost chicken then you would have been waiting at least an hour for the chicken to thaw in cold water. In the fridge, the chicken would take several hours to thaw.

So, if you are needing to cook right away and don’t have the time to wait until it is thawed, frozen chicken can be defrosted and fried at the same time by increasing the time it is cooked to about 1.5 to 2 times longer than usual.

Final Thoughts

As we conclude, know that you can indeed fry frozen chicken. If you forgot to take it out to defrost or have just decided that it’s frozen chicken on the menu for dinner, you can fry it without thawing. Although it is recommended and better to thaw it first, it is safe to fry frozen chicken.

Be sure to follow the important guidelines on how exactly to do this the right way. By frying at the right temperature and for the right amount of time, you will have some golden and crispy fried chicken in no time.

Keep in mind that it will take about 1.5 to 2 times longer as it usually would to fry frozen chicken. Still, you can fry frozen chicken if you need or want to.
