Rice is a staple food around the world. This food is easy to prepare and it goes well with almost anything.

It is a great side dish and a wonderful additive to soups. Rice has even been made into desserts and healthy treats. Rice is cheap, easy to prepare, and it is fairly easy to store.

There are many different varieties of rice. White rice and wild rice are the two most popular kinds of rice.

Though, wild rice is not technically a rice. It is the seed of an aquatic grass that grows in shallow water like small lakes or slow-moving streams.

It was not until the 1950s when this wild grain was first cultivated so that it could be grown, harvested, and then sold. Wild rice contains more fiber than traditional white rice and it has nearly double the amount of protein as white rice contains, which is even more than brown rice has.

Wild rice also has about three times as much iron, potassium, zinc, and magnesium as white rice has in it.

Wild rice is a food that has an unlimited shelf life if you store it properly. To store your wild rice, you will need to keep it dust free and keep it away from anything that might be able to contaminate it.

You can store uncooked wild rice in your pantry, your fridge, and yes, even in your freezer.

Uncooked wild rice can be kept in your freezer indefinitely, so long as it is kept away from contaminants. I recommend wrapping it in a freezer-safe plastic baggie or plastic container to keep other foods separated from it.

Can You Freeze Wild Rice?

Some rice can absorb odors from other foods so you will want to make sure that the wild rice is sealed properly. If you have a food vacuum sealer, that would be best to use.

Cooked wild rice can be kept in the freezer for around six months, however it can only be kept in the fridge for four to six days.

What Is The Best Way To Freeze Rice?

In the freezer section of your local grocery store you can find bags and boxes of cooked frozen rice. Rice is pretty easy to cook to begin with but the added convenience of being able to just toss it into the microwave and have a nice bowl of steaming rice in about a minute is sometimes too much to resist.

Obviously, if the grocery stores are selling cooked frozen rice, then there is a way to store it in the freezer but what is the best way to store cooked rice in the freezer so you can have a quick and easy additive to any meal?

To freeze your cooked rice, you will need a cookie sheet and a way to store your rice. You can use plastic bags or freezer-safe containers.

Prepare your rice as you normally would. You can use the stovetop, a rice cooker, or even your pressure cooker to prepare your rice.

Once it has been cooked, take the cookie sheet and spread the rice onto it. Be sure to fluff the rice as you spread it onto the cookie sheet.

Once your rice is in an even layer on the pan you will set it aside to cool. The cooling process should take about twenty minutes.

You want to make certain that the rice is completely cool before you freeze it so you will not get clumps of ice in your rice. Now that it is cooled you can put your rice into the containers that you have chosen.

Measure out the amount of rice that you want into each container, then be sure to label your container with the type of rice, the amount of rice, and the date that you have prepared it.

If you are using plastic freezer bags then you will want to store these flat. You can stack them on top of each other.

Your rice will last in the freezer for six months but has the best texture if used within the first two months of freezing.

How Do You Reheat Frozen Rice?

Now that you have some rice stored in the freezer for some quick meals you need to know how you can reheat it.

You can reheat your cooked frozen rice in the microwave. To use the microwave to reheat your rice you will just need to break it up into smaller chunks.

Your rice will likely have frozen together into a large clump in the freezer. Breaking it into smaller pieces will allow you to reheat the rice faster and won’t leave you with any still frozen pieces.

Once you have your rice broken into smaller pieces you can place it into a microwave safe bowl. You will want to cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a microwave safe cover. This will help to trap the steam into the bowl with the rice so it does not dry out.

Reheated rice can dry out rather quickly.

Place your covered bowl into the microwave and heat it for 2 to 3 minutes. Different microwaves cook differently so be sure to check on your rice after about a minute and a half.

If it needs more time than that, give it a stir, replace the cover, and then start the microwave for another thirty seconds to a minute.

Once your rice has been reheated, carefully remove the lid as there will be a lot of steam. Fluff the rice with a fork and serve immediately.

You can also add your frozen rice to soup. If you have a soup that you want to add rice to, it is so simple to add your pre-cooked frozen rice. All you need to do to add it to your soup is to make your soup as you normally would.

If you are wanting a chicken and rice soup, go ahead and make the chicken soup without the rice. Once your soup is fully cooked, you will bring your pot of soup to a boil.

Break your frozen rice into smaller pieces and carefully drop it into the soup. The rice will defrost and separate in the hot liquid.

Adding the frozen rice will stop the boiling of your soup. Once your soup begins to simmer once again it is ready to serve.

Now that you know how to store rice in the freezer and reheat it you can stock up on it when it is on sale.
