Can You Freeze Rice Noodles?

Ever been to an Asian restaurant where they served a certain type of noodles? You may have wondered, what is this stringy food blended together with meat and veggies? 

Those are rice noodles. And yes, they are exactly what they say they are. They are noodles made from rice. 

Maybe you have leftover Chinese food or you made your own rice noodles for dinner. You could have picked up many packages of them at the store hoping to save them for later. 

If this is you, and you have an overabundance of rice noodles, can you freeze them?

You can freeze rice noodles but they are best frozen when they are uncooked and not after you cook them. 

Can You Freeze Rice Noodles?

Rice noodles are so good and are a staple of Chinese and Asian food. They can be eaten alone or with meat and veggies and are even healthy to eat. 

Dating back to ancient China, rice noodles were made to adapt to climate changes. Northern China preferred wheat and millet which grew in cold weather but South China preferred rice which grew in hot weather. 

The noodles in China were traditionally made out of wheat and eaten in the North, so northern cooks tried to prepare some noodles by using rice. This was the invention of rice noodles. 

Now, rice noodles are popular not only in China and Southeast Asia but all over the world.

Rice noodles are easy to freeze but they freeze easiest when they aren’t cooked yet. The uncooked noodles keep fresh longer than cooked ones do in general and the same goes for when they are frozen. 

However, you can freeze cooked rice noodles, too. They just won’t last as long. 

Freezing food helps to preserve it so it can be used in upcoming weeks and months. Some foods last longer than others and there is a way every food should be frozen so you can get the most out of it. 

Rice noodles are no exception. There is a certain way to freeze them and a certain amount of time to freeze them for. But I will get to this later.

Can Rice Noodles Be Frozen After Cooking? 

Rice noodles are always better fresh but when you want to save some for later, you can freeze them. I already said that it is recommended to freeze them uncooked but can rice noodles be frozen after cooking them?

You can freeze rice noodles after cooking them although they will lose some of their texture faster than when you freeze uncooked rice noodles.

The reason it is better to freeze them uncooked (these include noodles that are plain and have been soaked) is because once they are cooked they lose their texture faster while they are being frozen. For best freezing results, put the rice noodles in a freezer bag and remove as much air as possible. 

Air trapped in the bag can produce ice crystals, which when it melts, will give you soggy noodles. If you are using a Tupperware container to store the rice noodles in the freezer, lay a piece of plastic wrap on top of them to reduce contact with the air. 

Rice noodles can last for only a couple months in the freezer whether they are fresh or cooked so it may be a good idea to place these near the front of your freezer to eat sooner. 

Still, if you freeze rice noodles you will be able to keep them for a good while and use them for a meal later on. 

You can also make rice noodles in advance. These are best kept in the fridge for 3 to 4 days but if you need to can be stored in the freezer. 

When it is time to thaw the rice noodles, place them in the fridge for 4 to 5 hours. This will give them plenty of time to defrost before you use them. 

After they are thawed you can use as you please. You can even defrost rice noodles for up to two days before using them. 

In the end, you can freeze cooked rice noodles to save for future meals. Just remember to store them properly and eat within a couple months.

How Long Do Rice Noodles Keep For? 

Have a lot of rice noodles you need to store for later? Whether they are dry, soaked, or cooked you may wonder how long it is okay to keep them for. 

Rice noodles last indefinitely when dry, they last 3 to 4 days in the refrigerator, and up to 2 months in the freezer if they are cooked or uncooked.

The website, Pantry & Larder has some helpful tips on how to store rice noodles. In their article,

How To Store Rice Noodles To Keep Them Fresh & Untangled, they state,

 “One issue with refrigerating rice noodles is that they have a tendency to clump together when they get cold and this can make them very hard to separate. To prevent the rice noodles from clumping together in the fridge follow these three steps: 

Wash the rice noodles with cold water…[this] gets rid of their starch coating, and the starch is what causes them to stick together. 

Toss the rice noodles in oil…to make sure they’re all evenly coated and are easy to separate. 

Portion the noodles out…keep them in separate containers or use plastic wrap to separate the layers.”

Storing rice noodles all depends on what type of noodle and how it is already prepared. Cooked or uncooked, rice noodles will stay good in the freezer for up to 2 months. They will last in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days and if they are dry will last indefinitely in the pantry. 

Dry noodles will last for a long time but it is important to know that they do lose their texture over time. After the amount of time given for freezer or refrigerating rice noodles has passed, they should be tossed since they will no longer be good or even taste good. 

Over time, they will lose their texture. Dry noodles just stored at room temperature will remain safe indefinitely although these will also result in loss of texture as time goes on.
