Protein powder has taken the health aisle by storm over the last few years. There are not only several different flavors of protein powder but several different brands too. Anyone who uses protein powder on a daily basis will have an opinion about which protein powder is best.

While the protein aisle at the store or the site online may be long and daunting, most protein powders out there are full of protein and safe to use.

If you happened to purchase a few different brands at the same time to figure out which brand you preferred, is there a way to preserve the powder for later use? Or, what if there’s a sale on your favorite protein powder and you want as much protein as you can get?

Is there a way to store protein powder longer than its shelf life?

You can store protein powder in the freezer. Though protein powder already has a long shelf life, you can use the freezer to help extend it.

To extend the shelf life of your protein powder, place it in a freezer-safe container. You can also use a zip-lock baggie to place the protein powder into as well. The protein powder will last in the freezer for up to three months past its normal shelf life (or best by date).

Another way to store your protein powder is in ice cube trays. You can freeze the protein powder in the trays like you would ice. When the protein cubes are frozen, place them into a zip-lock baggie. This way, instead of defrosting an entire bag of protein powder at once, you can use a cube and place it right into your blender in the morning.

Can You Bake With Protein Powder?

Most people discover protein powder when they are looking to adjust their lifestyle. Whether they are vegan and need to include protein in their daily life or they are looking to lose weight or bulk up, protein powder is key.

Adding protein to your diet can be healthy, as long as it’s done in moderation.

If you are taking protein powder in moderation but are getting bored with protein shakes, is there another way you can consume the protein powder? Could you replace flour in a recipe with protein powder since they are both powders?

Does baking with protein powder diminish the nutrients in it?

You can cook and bake with protein powder. While you can’t substitute all the flour in a recipe for protein powder, you can substitute some. For every cup of flour you use, you can replace ⅓ cup of it with protein powder.

You can eat protein pancakes for breakfast, protein granola bars for snacks, and protein peanut butter cookies for dessert. You can create all kinds of protein-filled foods by adding protein powder.

When you bake or cook with protein powder, it will not lose any of the nutrients. If you are adding fruits and veggies to your protein-baked foods, the fruits and veggies will lose some nutrients, but the protein powder won’t.

What Happens If You Have Too Much Protein Powder?

Have you ever wondered what happens if you eat too much protein powder? Having protein in your diet is necessary for survival, but what happens if you were to get too much protein in a day?

Are there any side effects? How do you know if you are eating too much protein?

There are a few different concerns when it comes to using protein powder every day. There may be other ingredients in your protein powder that can end up causing more harm than good in your fitness routine. Here are a few things that can happen if you consume too much protein powder.

  • You could end up gaining weight: Protein powder is a great source of protein, but there are also other ingredients in the protein powder that can end up adding on a few pounds. There are some added sugars and other ingredients to help preserve the powder and add flavor. All these added sugars in the protein powder could lead to weight gain. Another reason you could experience weight gain while taking protein powder might be because of how you are consuming the protein powder. If you are adding sugar, fruit, milk, and other ingredients to your smoothies, you are consuming a lot more calories than you think. While these may all be good calories, having two or more protein drinks/snacks a day could lead to unwanted weight gain.
  • You may not get enough of other nutrients: If you are relying on protein powder for your daily intake of powder, you might not be receiving all the nutrients that your body needs. Our bodies are unique and need several different minerals and vitamins throughout the day. We typically get these different vitamins and minerals through our meals. If you are constantly replacing a meal with a protein shake, you might be losing out on some vital nutrients.
  • You could end up giving your body too much protein: If you are susceptible to kidney infections, protein powder may not be the best way to get your protein. Since protein powder comes in a concentrated form of high protein, you may be giving your body too much. If your body has too much protein, it can bog down your kidneys and cause problems. Our kidneys help to process out any excess protein in the body. If you are constantly putting protein in your body and still don’t feel great, you might be getting too much protein.
  • You could consume too much sugar: If you are looking to cut out sugar completely from your diet, it might be impossible if you still plan on using protein powder. Protein powders are usually made with flavors which in turn means sugar. If possible, try to find a powder that doesn’t have any flavoring and is very low in sugar. Otherwise, drinking your protein shake in the morning might be equivalent to drinking a can of soda sugar-wise.

Final Thoughts

Next time you are out shopping and see a great deal on protein powder, you can buy as much as you have room for in the freezer. You can store the protein powder in the freezer for up to three months past its shelf life.

You can wait until the powder is close to expiring, freeze it, and enjoy it a few months later. Protein is a great way to make sure you are getting the daily intake, but be careful as too much protein can end up causing problems.
