If you are a loyal fan of Oreos,  you know how delicious the sandwich cookies are. Many use them in other dessert recipes.

If you are one to make some Oreo desserts you most likely try to buy many packages of the cookies and store them for later. To keep them good longer, you can store the Oreos in the freezer. As you continue reading through this article you will find how to freeze the Oreos and for how long they can be frozen.

But know if you want to freeze the yummy cocoa cookies with creme, you can.

In an article by Mental Floss entitled 15 Cream-filled Facts About Oreos, they provide the reader with some interesting facts about milk’s favorite cookie. Along with saying that Oreos are the world’s best selling cookie, they also state, “THE NAME IS A MYSTERY. Oreo has gone through a few name changes over the years, initially going by “Oreo Biscuits,” then “Oreo Sandwich,” “Oreo Crème Sandwich,” and “Oreo Chocolate Sandwich Cookie” in the 1970s.

Oddly, the core name remains a total mystery. The origin of the word “Oreo” might be from the French word for gold (or) because the packaging in the beginning was gold, but no one knows for sure.”

Some other random facts about the beloved creme-filled sandwich cookies include one that the year 1912 was big for Oreos. Oreos were first manufactured that year on March 6, at the Nabisco factory in New York City.

The original Oreos were released along with another lemon meringue flavored cookie that was discontinued 8 years later. And just because, did you know that every year there are 123,000 tons of creme made to fill Oreos and more than 500 billion of the cookies have been sold to Oreo loving fans.

Another fun fact is one you probably know and it is that because of the fats and sugars Oreo contain, they are pretty addictive.

Do Oreos Taste Good Frozen?

Freezing foods is great to preserve and save them for later. We know that you can freeze Oreos but will the cookies still taste good after being frozen?

Oreos will still taste good after being frozen. Freezing the cookies is a great idea to keep them long term until you’re ready to eat them.

Freezing Oreos doesn’t do anything to the state or texture of the cookie and it will still be good when you go to eat them weeks or even months later. Just be sure you are freezing the Oreos properly so you can keep them tasting great.

First, you can freeze Oreos in their store wrappers if the seal is still intact. The only thing is, once you thaw the package you will have to use up all the cookies.

You can also freeze Oreos by wrapping them individually and placing them in freezer bags so you can just pull out as many as you need, thaw them and enjoy.

To thaw the cookies just leave them sitting out on your counter until you want to eat them. However, you can also choose to eat frozen Oreos as they are really good as well.

Oreos will eventually go bad so if you want to save them for later, try freezing them. Frozen Oreos can last indefinitely but it is recommended you eat them within 8 months of freezing for best results.

You don’t have to worry about how they will taste after being stored in the freezer because the Oreos will still taste good after being frozen.

How Long Can You Keep Oreo Cookies?

When it comes to Oreos, we want them to last forever. But unfortunately this is not possible and over time they will become stale.

Some things factor into the lifespan of the yummy sandwich cookies. So, how long can you keep Oreo cookies?

If stored properly, you can keep a package of opened Oreos until their best by date or until they taste stale and soft. An unopened package of Oreos can last for 2 to 3 weeks after the best by date or even longer if kept in the freezer.

You can keep an unopened Oreo package for 2 to 3 weeks past the best by date if it remains unopened.  If you have already eaten some of the cookies, you can keep it until the best by date or until they start becoming soft. When storing Oreos in the pantry, tightly reseal the package to keep them from going stale.

You can freeze Oreos to help them last even longer. When you freeze Oreos correctly, they could last indefinitely but should be eaten within 8 months for best taste and texture.

But if you like to pick up several packages to save for a special dessert, you can freeze them until you’re ready to use them. You can freeze the whole unopened package of Oreos or if it is opened you can wrap them individually and freeze in a freezer bag to thaw and use later.

You can also just grab an Oreo from the freezer bag, and enjoy it frozen. Some people think that this makes them taste even better (if this is even possible).

Final Thoughts

If you want to freeze Oreos, you can! Freeze them in the unopened package or wrap each cookie individually and use as you need them.

Oreos will last for months in the freezer and will still taste good when it’s time to eat them. You can thaw them out or simply eat them frozen.

However you are using Oreos, enjoy them longer by freezing the crispy chocolate and creamy centered cookies.
