Eggs are healthy to eat and contain a lot of nutrients. They are a good source of high quality protein and are low in carbs. Eggs are also rich in vitamins A,B12, B5, B2, etc.

Eggs are considered a superfood and are one of the most nutritious foods.

People with a low-carb diet will most likely turn to eggs for meals. If you love eggs you may use them in many different kinds of recipes.

One of these recipes has probably been a simple and tasty egg salad. You may have noticed that egg salad doesn’t stay good for long and after a few days in the fridge goes bad. Smaller portions will get eaten up quickly but larger ones will tend to have a lot of leftovers.

If you make a lot of egg salad and know that you won’t eat it in a few days, can you freeze it?

While it is not recommended to freeze egg salad it is safe. You can freeze egg salad for up to 2 months but the texture of frozen egg salad will be different than fresh.

Can You Freeze Egg Salad?

If you are a fan of eating eggs you are probably a fan of egg salad. Egg salad is commonly used as the filling for egg salad sandwiches as well as a topping for green salad. It is made up of chopped hard boiled or scrambled eggs, mustard, and mayonnaise, celery, onion, salt, pepper, and paprika.

The creamy egg mixture is similar to chicken salad, ham salad, macaroni salad, tuna salad, lobster salad, and crab salad. Normally, egg salad only lasts about five days in the refrigerator.

The ingredients of egg salad will not keep well stored in the freezer. If the eggs in eggs salad are frozen they will become tough and rubbery in texture and won’t taste as fresh. The mayonnaise mixed into egg salad does not do well in the freezer either.

However, even though the quality of the egg salad will change once it is frozen, it is still safe to store it in the freezer to save for up to 2 months. So, if you need to freeze it, you can. But, keep in mind that it won’t taste as good as when you first made it.

How Long Does Egg Salad Last In The Freezer?

So you probably shouldn’t freeze egg salad unless you want slightly rubbery eggs, plus the mayo doesn’t freeze well, but what if we absolutely have to? How long will it last in the freezer?

Egg salad will last for up to two months in the freezer.

When you make a lot of egg salad you are probably glad you can enjoy the food more often. You can save it to eat wherever you are craving some of it.

After your fifth egg salad you may question if making so much was a good idea. Even though it is good and you like to eat it, you’ve had too much and are getting tired of eating egg salad.

Eggs spoil quickly so the best thing to do is only make enough for what you need it for. Or if you are eating it within the next week, pop the leftovers in the fridge and eat within 5 days.

Egg salad will only last about 5 days in the fridge. So, if you want to keep the egg salad for longer than a few days, you can try to freeze it.

Like I said before, freezing egg salad is not recommended because the texture will become  tough and rubbery. After freezing egg salad for a couple months you should toss it out if you haven’t thawed it to eat yet.

Freezing decreases the quality of the egg salad anyways so after 2 months it will no longer be very good to eat (although it will still be safe).

Say you decide to freeze the egg salad you made. Well, here’s some tips to help you out so you can do it the right way.

Freeze egg salad right away. Right after you are finished making it and everyone has had their fill of egg salad sandwiches, freeze it then. You don’t want to freeze egg salad that has already been in the fridge for days.

Just scoop it up into a freezer safe container and seal the lid on. Then label with the current date so you know when you put it in the freezer. Try placing the egg dish near the front of the freezer so you remember that it is there and eat it within 2 months of freezing.

When it came time to thaw the egg salad just place it in the fridge overnight. Remember that the texture and consistency won’t be the same as fresh egg salad so you may need to stir it up well and add in a little more mayo before eating it.

Can You Freeze Food With Eggs In It?

Eggs typically don’t freeze well except for raw egg whites, raw egg yolks, and raw whole eggs that are shelled and whisked. Can you freeze food with egg in it?

You can freeze dishes like breakfast casseroles or quiches that have egg in them. As long as the egg is cooked into a dish it should be fine to freeze.

You shouldn’t freeze raw eggs because the liquid inside them will expand and cause the shell to crack causing the egg to spoil and become contaminated. Freezing raw and shelled eggs can affect their texture and the yolk will become thick and gel-like making them difficult to cook or bake with after they are thawed.

You also shouldn’t freeze hard or soft boiled eggs. These will become rubbery and watery when they are thawed. If you must freeze eggs, stick with only raw egg whites, raw egg yolks, and raw whole eggs that are shelled and whisked.

However, you can freeze food that has egg cooked into it like breakfast casseroles or quiches. These should be cooled after being cooked and then covered with an airtight lid and placed into the freezer.

Freezing individual slices of the cooked dish containing the egg may be easier in the long run. For this just wrap each slice individually and transfer into a freezer bag. Then store in your freezer until you are ready to use it.

If you’re freezing non-crust casseroles, try baking them in a muffin pan for individual servings that can then be put into a freezer bag and frozen easily.

Final Thoughts

Egg salad doesn’t normally freeze well but is safe to freeze for up to 2 months.

Eggs are a delicious food that can be eaten for breakfast or any time of day. Eggs are a staple ingredient of many households and are used in all kinds of dishes from casseroles to desserts.

You can freeze some types of eggs and food made with eggs like casseroles and quiches. Egg salad is a favorite food for many people who like to eat eggs.

Sadly, it doesn’t last very long. It is better to only make enough egg salad that you can eat in a few days than a whole lot that may go to waste.

While it is safe to freeze egg salad for up to 2 months it is recommended not to since it will alter its texture and taste.
