Cold foam has increased in popularity over the last few years. If you were to walk into a coffee shop pre-2010 and ask for cold foam, you would have gotten some stares. Now when you ask for cold foam, you also get to choose what flavor of cold foam you would like.

If you are new to iced coffees and cold foam, you might have a few questions like, what is cold foam?

Cold foam is a topping for any of your cold coffee drinks. Cold foam is frothed nonfat milk. You can add cold foam to your iced coffees, iced cappuccinos, or any other cold drink that you think it would pair well with.

Many coffee shops now sell cold foam, for an additional cost, as an add-on to your cold coffee drinks. If you were wanting to save money and make your iced coffee at home, can you add the cold foam too?

Is cold foam something that you would have to make by hand or can you find cold foam in stores?

You can purchase cold foam in stores. Reddi Wip sells cold foam in a can that you can add to your favorite cold drinks. All you need to do is shake the can, remove the cap, press the nozzle down to release the cold foam, and voilá you have cold foam for your drink.

The Reddi Wip cold foam will last in your fridge for a few weeks unopened and about a week opened. You can also freeze your can of cold foam in the freezer for up to two months.

Is Whip Cream Different Than Cold Foam?

Reddi Wip makes both whipped cream and cold foam. How do you know that when you purchase cold foam, it’s not just slightly altered whip cream?

If you were to purchase a tub of whipped cream, could you l use it as a cold foam?

Whipped cream and cold foam are different. While Reddi Wip’s cold foam may come in a can, it is typically something that you can pour into your drink.

Whipped cream is something you either spray or scoop, never pour. They are both made using the same method of adding tiny air bubbles to milk and sweetener; however, whipped cream is thicker and can hold shape.

Whipped cream is also much sweeter than cold foam and typically doesn’t have a flavor. Cold foam can come in many different flavors depending on the syrups that were used to make it.

Can You Make Your Own Cold Foam At Home?

One of the benefits of eating out is that you do not have to make the food or clean up. The same is true when you decide to go to a coffee shop vs. making it all at home.

However, some people do enjoy trying their hand at being a barista. When you choose to make your coffee at home, you can get a bit more creative with flavors, temperatures, and more.

If you prefer iced coffee over hot coffee, then you probably know all about cold foam. If you enjoy making your coffee at home, can you add cold foam to the iced coffee that you’ve made?

Is it better to make your own cold foam or purchase it from the store? If you can make it at home, do you need any special tools to create your cold foam?

You can make cold foam at home. There are a few different ways that you can create your own cold foam to add to your iced coffee.

  • You can use a French press to create cold foam for your coffee. Creating your own cold foam with a French press is very easy. All you need to do is put half and half and sweetener into your French press. Place the lid on the French press and move the plunger up and down. Your half and half and sweetener will mix together perfectly, increase in volume, and turn into a delicious cold foam.

When you pour in the half and half, be sure to not add too much. As you move the plunger up and down, bubbles will start to form. These bubbles are necessary to create the cold foam. However, if you add too much half and half in the beginning, you will have an overflowing French press in seconds.

  • You can use a handheld milk frother to create cold foam. A milk frother is a great option to use if you do not have a French press. Just place your half and half and sweetener in a bowl and use your milk frother to create cold foam. It should only take about 20 seconds before your half and half will turn into cold foam. After you are done, you just pour your cold foam on top of your iced beverage.
  • You can create cold foam in a jar. If you do not have a French press or a milk frother but still want to make cold foam, no worries, all you need is a jar. Be sure that you choose a jar that has a tight-fitting lid. This method will take a bit more work than the French press and milk frother, but the results are still the same. Just pour your half and half and sweetener into the jar, make sure the lid is on tight, and shake vigorously. How quickly it turns into cold foam depends on how vigorously you shake the jar.

You can get creative with the flavors of cold foam that you create too. To have different flavored cold foam, you just need to add flavored syrups.

There are plenty of syrup flavors available that you can experiment with when making your cold foam. You can choose seasonal flavors like pumpkin spice or peppermint to create or mix it up a little with flavors like lavender, honey, or vanilla.

Final Thoughts

Next time you go to pour yourself some iced coffee, be sure to leave some room for your cold foam. You can either purchase a can of cold foam in stores or make it yourself.
